KNF has provided GuardianTM fuel for the Optimized Power Reactor(OPR1000) since 2001 in order to enhance the debris filtering efficiency. For 3-loop Westinghouse type plants, Robust Fuel Assembly(RFA), which includes key mechanical enhancements to improve structural stability, vibrational characteristics and DNB performance has been provided since 2003. In 2002 KNF completed the development of PLUS7TM, which is an advanced fuel for the OPR1000/APR1400. For Westinghouse type reactors in Korea, development of advanced fuel, ACE7TM was copmpleted in 2004. Improvements of reactor core design and safety analysis methodologies were completed in 2006.

KNF is exerting to strengthen the safety, reliability and economics of the fuel through continuous improving of the fuel components and assembly designs. In addition, KNF has established a plan to develop an advanced fuel with high performance.

For the stable supply of fuel components and the cost reduction of fuel manufacturing, KNF is conducting a program for domestic production of the key fuel components and a program for standardizing various manufacturing and inspection techniques. KNF is also planning to develop the basic technology for manufacturing the burnable absorber rods.

KNF plans to develop the on-site fuel examination techniques and equipment for collecting the in-pile fuel data which will be utilized in developing advanced fuels with enhanced safety and economics. KNF is also accelerating the development of the fuel repair techniques and equipment for repairing damaged fuels within the shortest time.
