- “Domestically Developed Accident Tolerant Fuel Test Assembly Begins Irradiation Testing”

KEPCO Nuclear Fuel (President Jung Chang-Jin) has successfully developed Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) technology from materials to commercial manufacturing processes, and following the successful test fuel rod irradiation for in-reactor performance verification, has initiated test assembly irradiation testing at Hanul Unit 6.

The developed Accident Tolerant Fuel consists of chromium (Cr)-coated cladding and enhanced performance pellets (LAS-Doped UO2 pellets), providing superior safety compared to conventional nuclear fuel and enabling greater safety margins for nuclear power plants.

The Accident Tolerant Fuel successfully developed by KEPCO NF is part of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's Nuclear Core Technology Project, and commercialization is being pursued in collaboration with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., with the commemorative ceremony for test assembly loading held on the 1st.

The Accident Tolerant Fuel is expected to contribute to carbon neutrality and eco-friendly energy transition through nuclear power by meeting the criteria of both the Korean Green Taxonomy and the EU Green Taxonomy. Furthermore, KEPCO NF has been leading nuclear fuel localization by successfully developing domestically proprietary technologies including “HANA cladding” and “HIPER16 nuclear fuel”.

President Jung Chang-Jin stated, “We will continue to verify the performance of the Accident Tolerant Fuel and advance it with better technology, striving to lead the future of safe and sustainable nuclear energy”.
