- Leading Development of Nuclear Fuel for Innovative Small Modular Reactors

KEPCO Nuclear Fuel (President Jung Chang-Jin) announced that it held the “i-SMR Day” workshop at its headquarters in Daejeon on the 22nd.

“i-SMR” (Innovative Small Modular Reactor) is a technology development project jointly promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, with KEPCO NF responsible for developing nuclear fuel and core technology suitable for SMRs. The event was held for KEPCO NF employees to successfully achieve goals in i-SMR technology development. The event began with opening remarks by Cho Beom-Jin, the Head of i-SMR General Operations, and congratulatory remarks by Choi Jae-Don, the Chief Technology Officer, followed by presentations on the i-SMR technology development project progress and key performance results and issues for KEPCO NF's participating projects.

KEPCO NF is participating in nine government projects, including development of SMR-applicable core design codes and methodologies, and development of nuclear fuel and core components optimized for boron-free cores and flexible operation, considering the innovative characteristics of i-SMR that ensure safety, economic efficiency, and flexibility. To this end, the company operates the i-SMR General Operations Team and a special dedicated organization for establishing SMR strategies.

President Jung Chang-Jin stated, “We will enhance our technological and business competitiveness in preparation for the global SMR market growth, establish SMR business strategies and build foundations to capture next-generation markets over the next two years, and strengthen the development of safe next-generation SMR nuclear fuel with flexibility and economic efficiency”.
