Korea Nuclear Fuel(KNF) has produced nuclear fuel for 25 years since 1989. KNF is the only nuclear fuel manufacturer in Korea and is specialized in design and production of nuclear fuel. Let`s listen to the future of the company from Ik-Hwan LEE, the new CEO of KNF.
- Please tell us about your feeling of becoming the CEO of KNF.
In these days, nuclear energy is considered as the most important source for national energy industry. It is really honorable that I am the CEO of such an important company.
In the meantime, we are in the age of Nuclear Renaissance and it is time for Korean nuclear industry to make its way to all over the world, so I feel great responsibility for this position. |

- What are the potentials and problems of domestic nuclear fuel supply? and what is the role of KNF in successful and safe supply of nuclear fuel?

At present, Korea is 6th country in the scale of nuclear power generation and 1st country in the capacity factor of nuclear power plant in the world.
The key factor is the quality of nuclear fuel. With assurance in the quality of nuclear fuel, Korean nuclear industry has been developed up to now.
KNF is making its best to supply safe and good nuclear fuel.
Supply of reliable and safe nuclear fuel, global competitiveness, continuous technology development, export, making a company looking forward to the future are vision of KNF and with these visions, KNF will be the leading company in the world.

- Experts said that KNF has complete independence in nuclear fuel supply and also has safety and competitiveness.What is the plan for the future?
Nuclear fuel technology can be divided into two, one is design technology and the other is production technology. As for design technology, KNF is one of the top companies in the world. KNF also has expertise and competitiveness in production technology, but KNF does not have patents for some original technology. Therefore, our company is striving to obtain the patents. |
- What is the future plan for international cooperation?
In this year, KNF will broaden the global business. If necessary, KNF will cooperate even with competitors. With continuous cooperation with traditional leading countries in nuclear field like USA, EU and China, KNF is operating educational programs for South-East Asian countries which are promoting the introduction of nuclear energy.
KNF has a unique advantage that other companies like Westinghouse company of USA and Areva of France do not have. KNF has imported many technology from the companies and developed domestic technology based on the imported technology.
This inevitably is an attractive advantage for the countries trying to introduce nuclear power plants. I believe that |

KNF is the only company in the world producing nuclear fuel for both Pressurized Water Reactor(PWR) and Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor(PHWR).
