KNFC Completes the Building of TOFAS KEPCO Nuclear Fuel Co. (KNFC, CEO Sang-bong Jeong) announced on 28th that it finished building the Test facility Of Fuel ASsembly (TOFAS). The TOFAS tests for impact, vibration, flexing and underwater vibration against nuclear assembly to assess any mechanical characteristics of nuclear fuel, being used for the development and verification of a nuclear fuel simulation model and the production of data linked for seismic analysis. Final fuel assembly has so far been tested for verification by overseas institutes, facing the concerns of design information leakage and the difficulties in source technology development. The construction of the test facility is expected to help KNFC enhance its capability for nuclear fuel design and development by enabling the independent performance from nuclear fuel development to final verification. Also, the facility will be used to develop the latest technology for seismic analysis related to enhancing the seismic safety for nuclear fuel under the current trends of reinforcing seismic safety requirements, domestic and overseas, after the outbreak of the Fukushima accident. “Our desire and aspiration for an independent verification led to availing us of the final TOFAS, achieving the capability to create a growth driver for future,” said CEO Sang-bong Jeong, adding “I’d like to ask to further continue endeavors to develop a technology for quality nuclear fuel and, especially, work hard for facility safety.”
