KEPCO NF wins contract to supply RDS to Fukushima, Japan

For the first time in Korean industry, the company offers RDS and management technique to treat contaminated soil in the drains.

KEPCO NF jumps into the decontamination market, for the first time as a local company, to be involved in radioactive soil decontamination work at Fukushima nuclear plant by exporting radioactive decontamination equipment to Japan. The CEO & President Kim Ki-hak, KEPCO NF, the only domestic fuel design and manufacturing company, said on September 5 that KEPCO Nuclear Fuel and RDS International (Radioactive Decontamination Solution International, President Junji Nonaka) singed the contract to provide 10 sets of radioactive soil decontamination equipment.

In accordance with the agreement, the company will be responsible for treatment methods, management skills, manufacturing & supply of equipment, and facility maintenance service to treat radioactive soil deposited in the drain at Fukushima nuclear site. The device supplied by KEPCO NF is expected to be used for soil decontamination in the drains at the Fukushima radioactive contaminated areas in earnest this October following the final acceptance test from Japan, and additional supply of 10 devices is planned to offer in November.

President Kim of KEPCO NF, dedicated himself since last two years to acquiring the project in  radioactive decontamination and reduction field ahead the others through prompt incorporation reform and R&D, announced expecting “ the equipment would help fast restoration in Fukushima plant site. ”, and “ We will play a major role in the international nuclear decommissioning market with advanced and improved decontamination technology to suit infinite demand in the future and contribute to the company as a growth engine. “

The Radioactive Decontamination Solution is a high performance soil treatment device for purifying the deposited radioactive soil in the drain, which causes contamination of water by being flowing into streams or lakes in Fukushima, Japan, using phyllite based-precipitate solution after dredge processing. It also has outstanding environmental features to return clean water and soil up to 80% back to the nature afterwards. KEPCO NF is further in prospect to develop and support the government-led R&D project on disposal, storage and management technology for about 20% of cesium contaminated sludge left from the soil treatment in collaboration with local SMEs.

The company is soon to file domestic and international patent applications for acquired decontamination technology and equipment through the process. What is more, a significant contribution to the world nuclear industry is also expected in terms of securing the safety measures by developing and exporting the device, not only to have new growth engines for the company itself but enhanced international reputation as it dominates the market in advance.

It is known that KEPCO NF has been managing radioactive waste and decontamination skills all this time and the know-how consequently formed the basis of this achievement to export its equipment to Japan. When public opinion was made for the need of biological treatment of radioactive soil since the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the company reached to sign MOU with RDS Int’l, Japan to launch a new project in RDS business sector. It appears that Japan is to grow concerns in radioactive waste and soil, which is temporarily stored, from the Fukushima nuclear plant. Hence KEPCO NF is already in the middle of developing, to make preemptive move against J-gov’s direction on the issue, how to reduce the amount of radioactive soil significantly in cooperation with RDS Int’l and a university in Japan.
