On the 24th, Yoo Guk-hee, chairperson of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC), visited KEPCO Nuclear Fuel (KNF, CEO Choi Ik-soo), Korea's only company for nuclear fuel design, manufacturing, and services, to conduct an on-site inspection of the radioactive waste reduction process.

KNF produces and supplies nuclear fuel to 25 nuclear power plants in Korea and the Barakah nuclear plant in the United Arab Emirates. During this process, it generates 1,300 drums (200 liters per drum) of low and intermediate-level radioactive wastes, which include work clothes, gloves, and plastics, per year, and reduces approximately 1,200 drums of the wastes through thermal decomposition and melt decontamination.

On this day, Chairperson Yoo examined radioactive waste storage and how such wastes are reduced. He also looked through the high-intensity focused ultrasound, a type of decontamination process that won the first prize at the BIXPO KEPCO International Invention Fair.

During his tour, Chairperson Yoo emphasized the need to retain radioactive waste management capability suited for Korea’s high position in the nuclear power market to protect the people’s health and protect the environment.

CEO Choi Ik-soo replied by saying, “We are reducing radioactive wastes through eco-friendly initiatives and innovative technology, and we will continue to minimize environmental impact by staying committed to technology development.”
